Familiarisation Trip

We believe that western Croatia makes for a top notch CAS destination. Let us show you why!

From October 13 until 15, we will be hosting a familiarisation trip for six lucky CAS Coordinators from international schools. Not only will this be a chance for you to see what activities and projects your students could engage in, but it is also a time for you to be able to exchange ideas and collaborate with other coordinators.
INCroatia will be covering return airport transfers from ZAG, half board accommodation, and all the touring and inspections during the two days for the selected coordinators.

Please apply by filling in the form. Applications will be open until April 7th, 2017.

We look forward to hosting you on the shores of the Adriatic!

Process & Reflection

Experiential learning is the “process of learning through experience[1], but more importantly it’s about thinking about what you did and learning from it (reflecting on the experience). This is, in essence, what the IB asks students to do through their CAS experience.

CAS is just one of the many great things about the IB Diploma, although it may not always seem that way! However, being given the opportunity to choose personal learning experiences away from books and exams is pretty amazing. In interviews, it is often the tales of CAS that make individuals stand out from the crowd and in years to come, memories of those CAS adventures that provide the great stories.

There are loads of ideas out there for what to do for CAS; the difficult thing is choosing what to do! The IB advises students to think carefully when deciding on a CAS experience. Not only must this be in one or more of the areas Creativity, Activity, Service, but it must also provide opportunities for personal development. It doesn’t matter whether you succeed or not and there are no grades, it just matters that you have a go and learn from what you have done.

START YOUR INVESTIGATION

Take charge of your learning as you embark on the investigation stage. Think creatively and remember that what you want is important: just because something has not yet been done, does not mean that it is not possible. The IB suggests students ask the following questions when deciding on a CAS experience:

  • Will the experience be enjoyable?
  • Does the experience allow for development of personal interests, skills and/or talents?
  • What new possibilities or challenges could the experience provide?
  • What might be the possible consequences of your CAS experience for you, others and the environment?
  • Which CAS learning outcomes may be addressed?[2]

Get a group of like-minded individuals together, and we will help you to mold a trip to fulfill your CAS needs. Are there specific learner outcomes that you would like to focus on? Is there a specific area (creativity, activity or service) that you would like to develop? With a former CAS Coordinator as part of our team, we’ll make sure you’re on track.

THE FILM’S THE THING!

Craft a Shakespearean play in a 15th century medieval castle!

Launch yourself into the world of film and theater. Explore the nuances of Hamlet by walking the stage in a medieval castle. This is a unique opportunity for you and your friends to work together to create your own short movie. Guided by a professional director and film-maker with an actual 15th-century castle as your setting, Shakespeare’s Elsinore will come to life as you prepare a much-abridged version of Hamlet. Learn new skills, adopt a creative and analytical approach to the play whilst learning about yourself and others! All students will get to participate both in front of and behind the camera, while still enjoying the best of Istrian countryside.

A PICTURE’S WORTH…

Learn from a professional photographer how to take awesome pictures!

In today’s world, there are more photographs being taken than ever before. Many of us carry a camera around with us most of the time…only we call it a phone. Thousands of images are taken every minute. But most of those images are taken with very little thought. More to the point, most of them are never looked at again. Now is your chance to change all that. Join the workshops led by award winning British photographer Fernando. He has been a professional photographer for 20 years, and runs a photographic gallery in the Arts Town of Groznjan. Develop your “photographic” eye, and explore photographic manipulation techniques, to add a whole new world to your photography. All you need is a digital camera…and a lot of enthusiasm!

Relatively easy to grasp, you will jump into this action-packed sport on the first day. Explore the city of Rijeka, the largest transit port on the Adriatic, and then progress to the hidden corners of the unspoilt Kvarner Bay by kayak. Last but not least, you’ll get the opportunity to participate in socially useful action to clean up areas inaccessible by roads and in the spirit of competitive sports, take part in sea-kayaking relays and skills challenges!

OPERATION DOLPHIN

Collaborate with marine biologists in protecting dolphins on the picture perfect seas!

Swimming with dolphins was voted as the No. 1 ‘Must Do in Your Lifetime’ by the BBC. Whilst we cannot offer you this, we can offer an amazing insight into marine biology and the work done to gather information about and to protect dolphins at the Blue World Centre. The sea around Losinj serves as home to a large dolphin population (more then 120 specimens) and was proclaimed a nature reserve in 2006 by the Croatian Government. You will learn how dolphins are identified and monitored, before taking part in a field trip in search of dolphins to gather that all important data.

Horses have always been amazing companions, but the Pegaz Rijeka Riding Centre introduces an even more remarkable side of them. Specializing in equestrian therapy, Pegaz has an important role in mental healthcare in this region of Croatia. Students will discover equestrian therapy as it integrated into treatment and learn about the extensive operation within the center. And all that jazz!

Discover the power of music through movement and composition.

Croatia has a reputation in the jazz community for innovative musicians and thriving jazz scenes in Zagreb, Rijeka and Zadar. We are lucky to be able to work with Joe and Lela Kaplowitz who are two of the most established jazz artists in SE Europe; he is a pianist from Brooklyn, NY and she is a vocalist from Croatia. They have performed around the world and received several awards. Their signature workshops are based on uncovering the rich and powerful message of jazz within each person through improvisation, rhythmic and melodic games, and originally developed music performances. In particular, Joe and Lela will encourage you to be creative and experiment with music and instruments with the goal of being able to give a short performance back at school to raise money for your nominated charity.

Billi and Ivan were brilliant to work with! Their professionalism, knowledge of matching our needs and interests to their program was outstanding. Billi’s great communication and hard work to meet our budget was really appreciated. Our students felt cared for and the entire program was planned out so thoughtfully that our trip ran smoothly. When we needed support along the way with a few of our own bumps, we could count on Billi and Ivan to be there and that meant the world. Thank you for all you did to make this trip full of personal growth, excitement and special memories and an overall success!Susan Taylor , International School of Zug and Luzern

GRIFFON LOVE

The Griffon Centre is unlike anything else! Contribute to this unique charity and its incredible griffon vultures.

One of the best ways of helping animals might be to join a voluntary organization near you. However, the Griffon Vultures on Cres are the only ones that roost by the sea anywhere in the world, making the work done by the Griffon Centre on the mainland unique. They might not be all sweet and furry, but the Griffon Vultures have an important role to play in our ecology system and the work you undertake as part of the nature protection will be invaluable. This is a tiny charity needing your help!

Read about the Cres center where Dr. Goran Susic first began his amazing work for these birds before moving the centre to the mainland.
